Making Baby’s first foods is super easy and cost effective.    However, when introducing new foods to Baby, be sure that you remember to wait at least 4 days between each new food.  This way you can tell whether or not Baby has any allergies to the new foods.  By waiting 4 days, you can accurately trace back allergic reactions to specific foods.  Last month we posted a recipe for brown rice cereal.  This month, try one of these veggie purees with your little one.

Sweet Potato Puree:  Sweet potatoes  provide Baby with a great source of vitamins A, C, B6 and E.  They also are a great source of phosphorus, which helps with the development of healthy bones and teeth.

1 sweet potato, boiled or steam until very soft, peeled

1 cup breast milk

Simply combine both in your food processor, we like the Baby Bullet,  and blend until smooth.  As Baby grows you can thicken this puree by adding less breast milk.

Zucchini Puree:  Zucchini is a great source of vitamin C and B6, both are great in supporting the development of Baby’s healthy heart and eyes!

1 zucchini, boiled or steamed until very soft, peeled and cut into small pieces

1/4 to 1/2 cup breast milk

Again, combine in food processor and blend to desired consistency.

Remember, you can use ice cube trays to freeze single servings of any of your homemade baby foods.  Once frozen, pop them out and store in the freezer in a Ziploc bag.  When you are ready to use them just heat and serve!

Most infants start trying solid foods between 4-6 mos.  Ask your pediatrician when they recommend you trying solids with your little one.  You will want to start with low-allergy-risk foods.  Many people try a single grain baby cereal first.  You can buy these pre-made at any grocery store, but why not try making your own?   It’s simple and inexpensive….anyone with a food processor can do it.  Here is an easy recipe for brown rice cereal:

Brown rice cereal: Higher in fiber and nutrition than white rice, brown rice is great for energy and the development of a healthy nervous system.  Milled brown rice cereal is a fantastic first food for Baby.    Here’s all you need:

a food processor (we use the baby bullet and it’s milling blade)

1/2 cup brown rice

4 cups water

1.  Add 1/2 cup of uncooked brown rice to your food processor and process into a fine powder.

2.  Add the brown rice powder and 4 cups of water to a pot and cover until it boils.

3.  Once boiling, turn heat to low and cook covered for 20 min.

4.  Check the consistency, if you want it thinner add liqued until desired thickness is achieved.

5. This recipe will make 16 oz. of baby food.   You can freeze a portion of it in single servings, just pop them out and warm when needed.

So before you read this blog, I have to confess I am a bit of a breastfeeding nerd.  Courtney and I are both huge breastfeeding advocates not only because of all the amazing health benefits for mom and baby but because of the bond it creates.  With that being said…….I just heard about Medela’s new breast milk bottle, and I have to say I am pretty excited about it!  I haven’t given it a try, for obvious reasons, but if it does all it promises, it is going to be an amazing product for breastfeeding mamas!  They call it Calma.  Much like breastfeeding, It’s flow control system allows the baby to control the milk flow and only allows milk to flow when the baby creates a vacuum. Another great feature is there is only one size/shape nipple for all stages of breast milk feeding.  Switching my daughter to the faster flow nipple was one of the reasons she weaned earlier than I had planned.  The way that this bottle promises to mimic breastfeeding would have helped to prevent my sweet girl’s early weaning.   Also, it can be used with all Medela breast milk bottles, so going from pumping to feeding should be a breeze.

As I said before, I haven’t personally used their new bottle, but I can say that historically Medela has offered wonderful products to breastfeeding moms.  We often recommend their pumps to clients and friends.  So, all you breastfeeding mamas out there that will have a need for bottles, you may want to give this one a try!  And if you do, let us know what you think.
